As I am sure you’re aware, our lives have been changed by the COVID- 19 pandemic. One of the things that must change over the next while is the number of physical connections social distancing. It is recommended that we stay at least 6 feet away from each other to reduce the likelihood of transmission of coronavirus, which can even happen between people that show no symptoms. By social distancing, we will increase the likelihood that the healthcare system will not be overwhelmed with too many cases of severe illness occurring at the same time. Additionally, the State of Washington has recommended that we stay in our homes and eliminate all nonessential travel.
In order to reduce the frequency that our patients must interact physically in our office, we would like to offer virtual visits via Skype, Zoom, or telephone. Appointments may be made in the usual fashion by calling the office and scheduling time. You will be asked for a Skype or Zoom account name so that you can be called at the scheduled time. The call will consist of both audio and video components. You can easily download these apps at no cost.
In order to replicate some aspects of the normal prenatal visit, some equipment such as blood pressure cuff and fetal heart tone Doppler can be distributed to patients who don’t own their own equipment after 32 weeks of pregnancy. In order to conserve resources, if you have your own equipment we may ask you to use that.
At our hospitals, both Tacoma General Hospital and St. Joseph’s Medical Center, all elective surgeries have been postponed in order save personal protective equipment that is needed by doctors and nurses caring for COVID-19 patients. These can be rescheduled to a later date. It is uncertain when this maybe possible again but you planned surgery with us, you will be notified about when it can be scheduled.
We are also postponing annual preventive care visits and most routine gynecology. Virtual visits can be set up for most problems. We’re also able to provide refills on medications.
Some visits in the office may be unavoidable however, under no circumstances should you come to the office if you have cold symptoms such as dry cough, fever, or shortness of breath. If an in office visit is needed, we will also ask that you come alone into the office. If you have others with you, we ask that they wait outside of the office or in the car. For ultrasound, however, we still allow one healthy person to accompany you. Reducing the people in the office will decrease the risk of exposure to coronavirus for you, our patients and staff. Your understanding is appreciated.
We know that these are trying times with much concern and anxiety, especially for our pregnant patients. We are here to care for you and want you to feel welcome to call our office should you have any concerns at any time about yourself or your baby.
Wishing you continued good health,
Steven R Maynard, M.D. and Staff
